Sam Swayze is a freshman at Hillsdale College, and while he hasn't declared a major just yet, he is considering philosohy with a specialization in buisiness.

Sam keeps busy on campus as a member of the Beta Kappa Chapter of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, and also as a Hillsdale Contact Center agent where he helps to provide customer service to prospective students, generous donors, and the general public. He also participates in InterVarsity, a Hillsdale Christian fellowship. Additionally, Sam is active in the Hillsdale Federalist Society, Consulting Club, and Tennis Club.

Off campus, Sam has voluteered as an equity outreach director for Prichard Committee Student Voice team, as a mentor at the YMCA, and also as an English as a Second Language (ESL) tutor at Lafayette High School.

My motivation

While many courses have benefitted me, it was the rigorous academic environment and frequent stimulating conversations with peers that contributed the most. The high expectations at Hillsdale motivate the development of quick and thorough research skills, and the culture here is one marked by constant intellectual debate.

My latest accomplishments

I was recently awarded a $7,500 state-wide innovation scholarship for my business idea. I was awarded the scholarship by Michigan Colleges Alliance (MCA) through its Independent Innovators Network scholarship program.

This award makes me feel validated in my choice to attend a liberal arts college. For as much doubt that gets cast on the students at classical colleges, we are capable of changing the world too.

Next big goal

Ideally, I would like to proceed by conducting research in several cities. From there, I would be better situated to make community alliances and begin mapping out a long-term plan.

Favorite place on campus

The seminar room at the top floor of Kendall Hall. It's the best place to study!
