Independent Alum of the Day
Nic Scobey spent the first 18 years of his life in the small town of Middleville, Michigan. When he moved to Grand Rapids to attend Calvin College, his worldview was thrown for a loop as he learned the world was much larger than he expected. While on campus, Nic had numerous jobs, but the most significant to him was at Calvin’s Service-Learning Center. It was here that Nic was challenged to put his Christian faith into action and was pushed to consider how he could use his life to further God’s kingdom here on earth.
Nic graduated from Calvin in May of 2014 with a degree in biology and is taking a gap year before going to Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine in Grand Rapids. During his gap year, Nic is serving as a yearlong full-time volunteer through AmeriCorps VISTA at Catherine’s Health Center, a health clinic in the Creston neighborhood.
My motivation
Simply put: My faith motivates me. My faith compels me to make use of the time and talents that God has given me through finding new and challenging situations that help me to grow and to positively impact others.
My latest accomplishments
Although a lot has happened within the past year, I suppose that getting accepted into MSU's med school was what would have been the biggest "accomplishment."
Next big goal
I hope to travel a lot and cross as many things as possible off my bucket list before starting school in August. If I had to pick one thing, though, I might say that I want to have a conversation completely in Spanish with a stranger.
Why is choosing your own path important?
Nobody on the planet will ever have the same thoughts, dreams, wishes, aspirations, fears, and creativity that you possess. Therefore, it is important that you share all the unique things you have with the world. It wants to hear what you have to say, and it wants you to leave an impact. Don't be afraid to get messy, feel fear, or be tired. When you do what is most important to you, you will find a strength and passion you never knew existed.
